OPIOLO
Pronunciation: [Op-e-o-lo]
Translation: Derived from 'Opus' (Work of Art) and 'Solo' (Unique)
The Flavour Profile:
Opiolo is a coffee of immense gravity and brooding atmospheric depth. It offers a profile that sits at the opposite end of the spectrum to our African roasts prioritizing texture and weight over delicate acidity.
The Opening: The cup opens with a bold earthy pungency that immediately grounds the palate. Expect heavy aromatic notes of fresh cedar wood and a distinct smokiness that mimics the scent of the humid tropical jungle.
The Body: This coffee possesses a massive structural weight often described as a syrupy or chewy mouthfeel. The low acidity allows the dense flavours of spicy clove and cured tobacco to dominate the mid palate without interruption.
The Finish: The experience ends with a long and savoury conclusion. The spicy herbal notes persist to leave a rich aftertaste of dark baker's chocolate and sweet wood smoke that lingers for minutes.
The Science of the Bean:
The distinct Sumatran character of this coffee is not accidental; it is a result of extreme geology and unique traditional processing.
The Supervolcano: These beans are grown in the highlands surrounding Lake Toba which is the site of the largest volcanic eruption in the last 25 million years. The soil here is Andosol formed from ancient volcanic ash which is incredibly fertile and rich in iron contributing to the coffee's heavy body and mineral depth.
Giling Basah: This is the traditional Indonesian method of 'Wet Hulling'. Farmers remove the parchment skin while the beans still have a high moisture content of 30 to 50 percent. This exposes the green bean to the humid tropical air which creates rapid oxidation that neutralizes citric acidity and develops the signature earthy terroir.
Varietal Robustness: We use Catimor and Typica varietals for this lot. These hardy plants have deeper root systems that can penetrate the dense volcanic soil accessing nutrient layers that other varietals cannot reach ensuring a nutrient dense seed.
The Man of the Forest:
This coffee embodies the deep mysterious nature of the Sumatran rainforest and its most famous inhabitant.
The Orangutan: Opiolo is the sanctuary coffee representing the Orangutan who shares this habitat. Just as the Orangutan is a gentle contemplative giant who moves with deliberate slowness this coffee is slow moving and heavy in the cup. It does not rush; it lingers.
Conservation Ecology: Sumatra is one of the only places on Earth where tigers, rhinos, elephants, and orangutans live together. By sourcing ethically from these highlands we support an agricultural system that resists palm oil deforestation and protects the canopy corridors vital for primate survival.
